Procedures | Cystoscopy

Cystourethroscopy is a test which allows visualization of the inside of the bladder and urethra. During this procedure the urethra (opening of the bladder) will be anesthetized with lidocaine jelly which requires no needles. The cystoscope, which is a very small caliber fiber optic camera, will be inserted into the urethra and bladder. The bladder will be filled with sterile water. The entire bladder surface will be visualized on a TV monitor. Once this is complete, a different cystoscope which allows visualization of the urethra is inserted. The bladder is either emptied with a small catheter or you may choose to empty your bladder yourself. The entire procedure usually last 5 to 10 minutes. You will be given a prescription for a bladder analgesic as you may experience urinary frequency for the first 24 hours. Our emphasis is on performing a thorough but comfortable examination. We will talk you through the entire procedure and answer any questions you may have. Most patients’ have minimal if any discomfort and are happy they were not sedated, as you may return to your normal activities immediately.
